Today, I didn’t get a chance to produce, however, I had a very informative meeting with my friend Dani. Dani is the bass player for Mountain Springs church, and he is also a graphic designer for his company: Accent Co.
The goal for the meeting was to discuss ways that I could improve processes for my production business. One of Dani’s first suggestions was to get comfortable using an app called Notion. I had heard about this app before, but it was cool seeing Dani demo it in in action for me! The way he described it was that Notion is designed to be a framework for how you organize your business. It is a container to store information, and allows you to build different pages to publish that information. It can be used in many different ways, such as a project management tool, a word processor, and for client relationship management.
Another tool Dani suggested using was an app called Highnote. This is a file management and sharing platform similar to Google Drive or Wetransfer, but has a few extra features for musicians. A few cool features are the ability to upload different versions of a mix. You are also able to add notes within the file in case a client has any suggestions. I like these features because Google drive can quickly get disorganized if you are not careful. Several musicians I know use Dropbox to share files because it has timestamps. Luckily, Highnote has this feature as well! I am going to experiment using this platform for my clients, and hopefully it will work out!
My final recommendation for freelancers is to make sure to have a time tracker. Dani’s suggestion was to use Notion for that, but I wanted to also add an alternative. Based on feedback from Larnell Lewis, I use an app called Toggl track. Toggl allows you to track what you are working on in real time by starting and ending a timer. This is a handy feature because it allows you to track how many hours you put into a task.
I am grateful for the time Dani spent with me today, and I look forward to trying to use Notion and Highnote for organizing my business!
