This morning was the day to record bed tracks for my Advanced Production capstone project!
I arrived early to help setup the drums and the mics for the kit. We needed to plug the mics into a snake which was routed to a wall plug. The wall plug was linked to the studio console, which was linked to the schools computer.
Once the drums were setup, we did a quick band soundcheck with James on piano, and Taylor in the small recording both. Everything was sounding pretty good, and I helped Jessie adjust levels as well.
Justin opened up my Pro Tools session I made last night, and did a quick mix of the pre-recorded synth and percussion tracks. This was to ensure the mix was well blended for the musicians to listen to on their headphones. Taylor’s headphones weren’t working for some reason, so we did a bit of troubleshooting and ended up discovering it was a routing issue.
After fixing this problem, we began tracking. The first few takes were pretty good, but there was a piano line James was having trouble with. We decided to later punch in just this line so James could get the timing right.
Tudor’s drum parts were sounding great as well, but I wanted to also get a pass which featured a specific arrangement of textures. This arrangement consisted of kick and hihat for the first chorus, toms for second verse, add snare for second chorus, keep the energy for breakdown, drop for last chorus, then back up. I communicated this over the talkback mic to Tudor, and he was able to follow which was great!
I am happy with the results we tracked today! The next step will be making bed edits and adding some vocal and guitar overdubs.
