Today was my first day back meeting with LJ after a while! It was time to write the lyrics to the final song of our gospel album!
We were originally going to write a song called “Grateful”, but decided to switch gears and write a song called “I’ll Serve You”. We began by selecting a reference track to draw up some inspiration as we normally do.
We did something different for this one though. LJ decided to ask me to come up with a stock drum groove that he could refer to while writing the lyrics. Once he had this groove in place, he asked what key we wanted to be in. I suggested E major, and we came up with a nice 4 bar loop of chords that we thought worked well.
LJ tracked this loop, and then we began humming potential chorus melodies. Once we came up with one, I recorded a voice memo of this melody just so we wouldn’t lose it. After this, we came up with some lyrics for the chorus to accompany this melody we had come up with. The next step was coming up with the melody and lyrics for the verses, which we said we would do when we meet next on Thursday.
In addition, I also met with Fernando and Reuben Ghose today for the attended mastering session for his D.S. project. This mastering session took surprisingly less time than I thought because Reuben seemed to know how to approach mastering these tracks fairly quickly.
We began by discussing pacing ideas, and finalizing the sequencing. Once these were finalized, we moved on to the final touches of the EQ of the masters. Reuben removed the high boost he added, since we felt the master felt a bit bright.
I am looking forward to the Humber listening party happening in a few weeks to be able to listen to Fernando’s mastered tracks all the way through!
