Gospel rehearsal – March 14, 2024

Today, I didn’t have a lot of time to produce because of the late night session I had for my D.S. session yesterday.

I was debating whether or not I should listen to the songs straight away in the morning to make sure I was happy with them. I was worried because I knew I couldn’t change them if they weren’t the way I wanted them to be. I decided to put aside these emotions, and luckily I ended up being satisfied with the mixes we did at the session!

Tonight was a very special night for me because I got a chance to sub in playing drums at my friends church. It was called Church of God of Prophecy in Hamilton!

I decided to try something new for this rehearsal. I wanted to see if I could go without charting the tunes, so I could feel it more. I of course listened to the songs prior to going to the rehearsal, but didn’t want to be restricted by charting. I also knew that the singers may not follow the recording, so I had to be prepared for if they made any changes.

Turns out, they did just that, and I was ready for it! In fact, I feel I may have played the best I have in a while because I was supported by very strong musicians. I also believe it had to do with the fact that I was using my ears a lot, and I was also trying to play with conviction, even if it meant messing up! This was the greatest lesson I learned from studying drum lessons with Larnell Lewis last year at Humber.

I am happy I was able to follow along with the songs well, and was looking forward to playing them on Sunday at the service!
