Today was the day of my last mixing session for my Humber 4th year project!
I began the day by meeting with my producer James. I played him the final edits I made for “My Life”, as well as “Use Somebody”. After stating that he enjoyed the edits I made, we moved onto making a basic aesthetic analysis. This aesthetic analysis was designed to help us better communicate our goals to the mixing engineer.
For “Dreams” and “Use Somebody”, we referenced a previous sound stage we made, which had notes about which elements were primary and secondary. Primary elements were most often the vocals and the drums. Secondary elements were guitars and background vocals. Our main objective was to make the primary elements feel heard, and the secondary elements be heard but not as featured as the primary elements. To achieve this, we wanted to add techniques such as reverb, panning, as well as EQ.
Once James and I finished our meeting, I spent the next few hours prepping the last edits for the session which happened during the evening. The final steps I needed to take was adding in the background vocals Shanaya sent me, using Melodyne to tune these, as well as making sure the files were all organized nicely for the mixing engineer.
The mixing session with Wayne was a fun experience! We were able to get all the tasks accomplished that we had planned, and the tracks were now ready to be mastered. The biggest difficulty with the evenings session was staying awake during a late hour. I am glad we did the notes earlier in the day because it was hard to articulate everything clearly.
