Drum sample layering! – March 9, 2024

After receiving feedback from my professor on my arrangement of “My Life”, he suggested that I make the drums sound more modern, similar to what I did for my arrangement of “Dreams”. In order to do this, I needed to follow a few steps:

  • Step 1: Strip silence for kick track
  • Step 2: Create new instrument track – percussive
  • Step 3: Add an insert (SSD)
  • Step 4: Load the sample into sampler
  • Step 5: Map the snare to the correct MIDI note

*Repeat for snare sample, tom samples

Stripping silence allowed it to be a bit more precise when creating a new instrument (MIDI) track, meaning it focused on only the kick hits and not the bleed from the snare.

I chose to use the Steven Slate sampler to load my drum samples in. This worked well for when I did it for “Dreams”, so I used the same samples. Unfortunately, the kick sample worked well, but the snare required a lot of editing and didn’t quite sound the way I wanted it to. I decided to come back to it on another day.
