“Take Me Back” more lyric writing! – March 2, 2024

Today, it was time to finish the writing for “Take Me Back”, the song I started with LJ last week!

For this song, we had already written the chorus last time, so we needed two verses and a bridge. In gospel music, the bridge is also very important, so we decided to start there. The bridge we wrote ended up building off some of the lyrics we wrote for the chorus.

The verses came actually fairly easy to us, since we used some scripture verses to help draw inspiration. The particular book we decided to reference was the book of Nehemiah, who was reminiscing of a previous time in his life.

While I writing down relevant points of the scripture, LJ was playing a few melodic ideas. Once we heard a starting point for a melodic idea, we then tried our best to build this melody into a phrase, and then tried to fit some lyric ideas into these phrases.

I thought this was an effective way of doing writing because we broke it up into smaller pieces. We didn’t try to only focus on one element at a time, but instead we did melody relatively at the same time as we came up with a lyric.

Prior to writing this song, LJ and I wrote 3 other songs, and we have 3 more songs to write to round out the 7 song album,
